What medigap coverage plan is most popular?

The F supplement plan is usually the most popular in most states, simply because it is the easiest to understand. That does not mean it is the best deal for Oregon medicare, or the best plan overall. In a great majority of cases, the expenses would have been less with a different plan. There are several plans that are viable, cover the majority of large services, and are more affordable than F for a lot of people.

Medigap Plan F and Plan C

Plan F tends to be very popular, as it is so easy to understand. It also is generally the most expensive plan. Plan C is the sister plan of plan F, giving the exact same coverage with the exception of the “Medicare Excess Charge”.

Plan F and C cover 100% of all Medicare approved charges at the doctor and hospital, with no co-payments for any services, and no deductible.

Medigap Plan G and Plan D

Plan G is also a quite popular plan. Much in the same way that plan C is the sister plan of F, Plan D (not to be confused with Part D) is the sister plan of Plan G, offering the same coverage as G with the exception of the “Medicare Excess Charge.”

Plan G and D cover 100% of all Medicare approved charges at the doctor and hospital, with exception of the Part B deductible of $162. Before this deductible is met, you will pay the medicare approved charge for any services received, and after the deductible all Medicare approved charges are covered at 100%.

Medigap Plan N

Plan N is one of the new plans that was added with the recent Medicare Modernization Act. It is an often misunderstood plan, however it tends to be less expensive than most of the other viable supplement coverages.

The misunderstanding that is typically seen with this plan is related to how the deductibles, excess charge, and approved amounts work. These parts of Medicare are quite confusing, so it is no surprise that people do have a difficult time with them. However, the common misunderstanding of how the Medicare B deductible and excess charges work cause people to ignore a plan that is typically the best deal available in Medigap Coverage.

Medigap Plan N covers 100% of hospital charges covered by Part A, does not cover the Part B deductible or medicare excess charge, and has a 20% of the Medicare approved charge or maximum of $20 copayment (whichever is less after the Part B deductible of has been met. However, it also usually has the lowest premium of the Medigap supplement insurance plans available, and because of this it also has the lowest annual rate increases because it starts at a lower price, and most increases are percentage based.

The savings this plan gives are typically quite large, sometimes the cost is so much lower than even the same companies Plan F that you would have to visit a doctor over 100 times in a year before you paid as much as the premium amount on a Medigap Plan F premium would be every month.
